Artificial Intelligence: It’s Time to Get Involved
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved exponentially to become a potential pillar in the growth of modern society. From task automation to complex decision-making, its influence has been incremental on almost every aspect of our lives. Don’t believe it yet?
Cutting-edge technological advances in artificial intelligence
Recent years have witnessed notable advances in the field of AI. Machine learning systems, particularly deep neural networks, have led to significant improvements in areas such as speech and facial recognition, computer vision, and natural language processing. Additionally, large-scale AI models, such as GPT-3, have demonstrated surprising capabilities in text generation and language comprehension.
According to a 2023 study by the Data Science Institute (IDS) of the Engineering Faculty of the Universidad del Desarrollo, “AI has experienced rapid development and growth in various sectors over the past 10 years (SIA Partners, 2022; Stanford, 2023; Google Cloud, 2023; McKinsey, 2022), with a clear leadership of the banking, financial, insurance, and healthcare sectors (HBR, 2023)”.
However, these advances are not without crucial ethical challenges: such as the case of employability, information privacy, or the use of big data acquired through interaction with AIs. The need for strong, policy-driven, and ethical regulations to govern its implementation is becoming increasingly imperative. Thus, in the face of a local and global regulatory framework that is still under development, it is important to use good practices by all components of the ecosystem: the state, developers, companies, users, etc.
Global impact: opportunities everywhere
The impact of AI transcends borders and sectors. In medicine, advances in artificial intelligence are revolutionizing healthcare, from early disease detection to personalized treatment. In the manufacturing industry, AI-driven automation is optimizing processes and improving efficiency.
Customer service and e-commerce are not far behind, with the development of customer service bots based on the integration of databases, training, and machine learning. Today, the boundaries between the attention of a human agent and a bot have been significantly reduced, opening up spaces for efficiency in resource allocation and growth for both the private sector and society as a whole.
The integration of AI is a key trend in the digital transformation of companies. According to a survey conducted by Gartner in 2021, 59% of companies are already using public cloud services to host artificial intelligence applications and 37% are using private cloud services for AI (UDD study).
This is how we see that the future of this technology is exciting and challenging at the same time. The next wave of advances is expected to further transform the way we live and work. From generative artificial intelligence to advances in quantum and advanced robotics, the potential to revolutionize entire industries is immense. However, balancing this progress with ethical and social concerns will be essential to ensure a future that benefits humanity as a whole. Collaboration between technology leaders, regulators, ethics experts, and society as a whole will be essential to fully leverage the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential risks.
